The 2021 ATD International Conference & Expo is coming up! Each year, we like to plan out and prioritize the sessions we want to attend. But with 300+ sessions, how do you narrow down your list and identify the most relevant topics? We recommend checking out the following sessions at #ATD2021 to add to your agenda. This year, you can find a variety of topics including instructional design, talent management, leadership development, global perspectives, and many more!

1. Small Changes, Big Impact: Redesigning Moments for Authentic EVP

Presenter: Laura Hoppa (Principal at TiER1 Performance)

Timing: Sunday, August 29: 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM MT

EVP, the employee value proposition, is key to retaining employees and helping them understand the mutual benefit between the employee and company. Laura emphasizes finding authentic EVP moments in everyday employee experiences. By finding them, you can redesign the moments and reassure an employee of these values.

2. SMEs as Trainers: 5 Steps to Creating a Virtual Community of Practice

Presenter: Darlene Christopher, CPTD (Senior Knowledge and Learning Officer at World Bank)

Timing: Monday, August 30: 1:00 PM – 2:00 PPM MT

Do you depend on SMEs (small and medium-size enterprises) for your training programs? World Bank successfully created a world-wide community of practice of SMEs by utilizing their knowledge to create a virtual community. This session will provide you with the tools to explore incentives and awareness opportunities for SMEs and how to virtually activate SMEs and encourage knowledge sharing through inventive communication techniques.

3. True Grit: The Surprising, and Inspiring, Science of Success

Presenter: Angela Duckworth, PhD (Founder and CEO of Character Lab)

Timing: Monday, August 30: 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM MT

In this session, keynote speaker Angela Duckworth tackles the word grit- “the tendency to pursue long-term goals with perseverance and passion.” Grit is utilized in many different contexts. Angela uses varying examples from high-stress environments to analyze the correlation between grit and achievement.

4. Opportunity Assessment: Reframing Post-Pandemic Challenges

Presenters: Amy Graft, PhD (Global Learning World Lead at Siemens, North America) and Kendall Mealy (Senior Director of Leadership and Organizational Development at Physician Assistant Education)

Timing: Monday, August 30: 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM MT

The COVID-19 Pandemic has posed many challenges to workstyle and the design and delivery of learning experiences. There will be challenges ahead in 2022 and leaders will have to figure out the proper way to address them and turn them into opportunities. During this session you will work in small groups to analyze vast data for common themes and patterns using a design thinking method. You will also learn how to turn challenges into opportunities as well as attain fresh perspectives from experienced learning leaders in diverse industries.

5. I Landed a Job During a Pandemic: Here’s How

Presenter: Amy Dinning (Manager of Education and Development at Main Line Health)

Timing: Monday, August 30: 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM MT

Finding a job during the COVID-19 pandemic was difficult for many-but not impossible. Amy was able to find a job that was a right fit for her! This session outlines 10 steps you can take to proceed in your career path and obtain the position you want. You will have the opportunity to dive into every step and share your ideas as well as apply what you learn by building an individualized action plan.

6. Three Steps to Regenerate Your Team

Presenter: Patrick Lencioni (President of The Table Group and Bestselling Author)

Timing: Tuesday, August 31: 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM MT

A strong team is hard to develop but keynote speaker Patrick Lencioni offers some tangible tips in this session. He will teach you how to get the ideal people on your team, put them in the right position, and mold them into a high-performing team. These three steps will allow your team to command any industry and withstand any competition that comes your way.

7. L&D’s Playbook for the Digital Age

Presenter: Brandon Carson (VP of Learning and Leadership at Walmart)

Timing: Tuesday, August 31: 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM MT

Technology has drastically changed the workplace. We can now get more done at an elevated rate while simultaneously encountering complex systems and processes that workers need to learn how to navigate. Therefore, a modern playbook for the digital age is essential in L&D. This session will allow attendees to distinguish business problems caused by the digital age, design a proper playbook for digital age needs, and learn what a digital L&D team is and its’ function.

8. Amplify: How Women Leaders Ignite Their Impact

Presenter: Tacy Byham, PhD (CEO of DDI | Development Dimensions International)

Timing: Tuesday, August 31: 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM MT

Gender equity in the workplace is so important, but it is not always prioritized in the workplace. A company cannot perform at its’ best without enabling every individual to live up to their full potential. This session will allow you to heighten your impact as an ally of gender equity, apply new skills to aid the women you coach, and construct a plan to strengthen the women in your company by using new approaches and technologies.

9. Onboarding Reimagined: Experience Design to Create Authentic New-Hire Moments

Presenter: Grant Simmons (Performance Consultant at TiER1 Performance)

Timing: Tuesday, August 31: 3:00 PM-4:00 PM MT

An onboarding program should focus on an employee’s experience rather than just the tools. Grant’s session will teach you how to implement experience design methodology to design and deliver a uniform, inviting new-hire experience. Attendees will determine mindsets, actions, and goals that will create a uplifting onboarding experience. As well as learn how to invoke audience-specific, engaging, and authentic moments to bring the experience to life. Lastly, you will establish onboarding assets and deliverables that provoke desired behaviors, attitudes, and organizational outcomes.

10. Driving Transformation Through a DEI Learning Strategy

Presenter: Jill Carter (Director of Leadership and Organizational Development at Intermountain Healthcare)

Timing: Tuesday, August 31: 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM MT

Jill has many years of consulting experience in a variety of industries. She emphasizes how it is crucial to include diversity, equity, and inclusion learning strategies into your organization. TiER1 has made it a goal to focus on this by inviting our employees to go through an IDEA Journey to learn and discover their unconscious biases. This session will involve using a learning strategy toolkit to create one for your organization, establishing a structural outline and detailing measures of success of your DEI learning strategy.

11. How to Build Better Habits

Presenters: Charles Duhigg (Author) and Emily Gregory (The Vice President of Training Design and Delivery at VitalSmarts)

Timing: Wednesday, September 1: 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM MT

Everyone has a habit they want to establish, or get rid of, in their life. Habits can be difficult to maintain yet drive our long-term development. Strengthening a habit is key to future success in your own life and organization. In this session, you will determine how habits play out in your personal and professional life and how to build better habits using skill rather than willpower.

12. The 5 Second Rule: Achieve Breakthrough Performance in Your Career and Life

Presenter: Mel Robbins, JD (Bestselling Author and Award-Winning CNN Commentator)

Timing: Wednesday, September 1: 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM MT

Keynote speaker Mel Robbins shares her 5 Second Rule on how to get what you want in life. This session gives radical insights that will help with selling, leadership development, innovation, and success. She used this rule to reconstruct her life. Since then, she has devoted her life to helping others change their behavior, take calculated risks, drive results at work and at home, and improve their teams.
