Mary’s family is a University of Cincinnati family. Mary's husband, Eric, is a professor of communication at UC, where Mary earned her undergraduate and master's degrees. Their daughter Skyler is a UC student majoring in Criminal Justice, and their son Gabe has plans to attend when he finishes high school.
Mary's favorite book of all time is The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. It details the catastrophic outcomes of one family's well-intentioned mission trip to Africa, where all their assumptions about who and what is good are challenged. It is the story of women surviving and thriving in a patriarchal world, and the challenges of being a wife, mother, sister, and daughter.
Mary is devoted to community service and serves on the board of a non-profit that provides financial assistance to community members who are struggling due to a catastrophic health event. She stays in touch with her public-school roots by mentoring a CPS student.
