Employee Connection in the Workplace

Learn why employee connectedness matters and how you can grow connection at work.

by Feoshia Davis

Leaders of fast-growing, healthy and high-performing organizations need top talent to maintain and sustain growth. But today, workers are looking for more than a paycheck to fulfill all their needs in the workplace.

As humans, we are social beings and crave connection. As the world changes, so should the places where we spend most of our time, including the office. The most successful workplaces, especially those in the business services space, foster connection among employees.

“I LOVE the concept of Coffee Talk in our organization, and look forward to receiving the connection email each month. It’s always a win, because I either get to reconnect with an old friend, or I get to add a new branch to my network.” – Coffee Talk user

Workers Want to Feel a Sense of Connection

Workers want to feel connected to each other, to the company and its leadership, and to a larger purpose. A lack of connection can lead to dissatisfaction and isolation at work, and with more people working from home, creating connection is more important than ever.

Research shows that one-third of employees don’t feel fulfilled at work,* making them about 400 percent more likely to actively look for another job, 340 percent more likely to leave within a year, and 47 percent less likely to go out of their way to help the organization succeed.

These statistics aren’t great for growing organizations that rely on high performers to succeed in today’s economy. Engaged employees, on the other hand, are likely to stay with an organization at least three years longer than unengaged employees, the same report found. Engaged employees are also more likely to show up to work with a good attitude and willingness to go the extra mile, and even help others solve challenges.

Connection and Communication Are Intertwined

Connection starts with communication across all parts of the organization. How does your organization support its employees in creating space and time to communicate with each other? How often does it take in a diverse set of voices when making decisions that affect all employees? Where are the gaps in your organization’s communication channels and how can you work to close them?

A healthy organization wants workers to show up every day, grow, and thrive as they invest more time with the company. Creating connection is one way to do that.
