We are thrilled to share that the Genentech Online Compliance Fitness Curriculum won the Life Sciences Trainers & Educators Network (LTEN) Award for the Industry Partnership (Provider) category. The LTEN Excellence Awards are the only professional awards program specifically recognizing excellence, innovation, and performance in life sciences training.
The Challenge
What began with a spontaneous 90-minute in-person meeting among two TiER1ers and a few members of Genentech’s Compliance team led to an opportunity to partner on creating an engaging curriculum that empowers Genentech employees to own their compliance training.
In 2019, Genentech made a transformational shift in their approach to compliance training. Instead of relying on a traditional hours-based approach that documents employees who complete the training, they switched to a competency-based training approach, which encourages Genentech employees to build a strong baseline of policy knowledge, enables them to use good judgement when making compliance decisions, and helps them to discern when complex circumstances require further guidance or advice.
The Solution
Together, over the course of six months, TiER1 and Genentech designed and developed a curriculum that included 24 eLearning courses tailored for specific employee groups within the organization. Instead of a “one size fits all” approach to the training, employees only needed to complete the courses that were true for their group. To help learners absorb, practice, and retain the content, all courses adhered to a five-part structure and followed a creative “compliance fitness” theme. Courses included a “Warm-Up” activity, a “Walk Through” workout that built foundational knowledge, a “Step It Up” scenario sequence to practice applying that knowledge, a “Fitness Challenge” with longer, more complex scenarios for learners to practice using good judgment, and a “Cool Down” that reviewed key messages. Not only did the program lead to measurable increases in adoption of the new approach, but it also resulted in a positive behavior shift among the 8,000-plus trained employees.
“TiER1 has developed a dedicated, responsive, and deeply knowledgeable team,” says Simone Handler, Principal Healthcare Compliance Manager at Genentech. “They were kind enough to educate us along the way, patiently explain the “why,” and provide creative alternatives whenever we pushed back. Despite the volume of detailed content, the TiER1 team dove right in. As a result, I now have a much deeper understanding of how to create a more engaging learning experience and am quite proud of the final outcome.”

The Result
From the start, TiER1 framed the Genentech and TiER1 partnership as “one team working together to create the curriculum.” By emphasizing co-creation and collaboration, the Genentech and TiER1 team relied on an agile, iterative process to create a robust learning experience that was outcomes-based, creative, contextual, and memorable for the learners.
“Winning the Industry Partnership award is really exciting for us because it means not only did we partner with Genentech to produce an excellent compliance curriculum together, but that the partnership and relationship shined through equally,” says TiER1’s Christa Music Nimmer, who served as TiER1’s engagement and project manager. “Creating outstanding learning experiences is always the goal. It’s always been equally important to me to be true partners with our clients and ensure the process to create that experience is also outstanding.”
“Our partnership with Genentech works because they are open to new ideas and ways of working, and they trust in our ability to not just get the job done, but to raise the bar on what good looks like,” adds Leanne Batchelder, TiER1’s client partner to Genentech. “They expect excellence from themselves and from their partners … and they are a lot of fun to work with along the way.”
