How Organizations Can Inspire Change

We all know that change is hard—especially for organizations. But at the heart of it, organizational change is difficult because people find it difficult to change. Recent research in neuroscience explains why: it simply takes a lot of energy for people to change the way they think and act. The good news is there are practical things organizations and leaders can do to make that process easier.

One of the most effective ways to inspire change is to create a positive vision of the future. Too often, change is framed around what’s not working today. While that has its place, it’s just as important—if not more so—to paint a compelling picture of what’s possible. People want to be part of something successful. They want to be part of a great team. Leaders can tap into that by helping their teams envision what success looks like and why the change will lead to something better.

Another powerful strategy is to build people’s confidence. Change can be intimidating, but reminding individuals of what they’ve already overcome can help. People don’t end up where they are by accident—they’ve worked hard and adapted before. Reminding them of that builds belief in their own ability to grow and improve again. It reinforces the idea that change is not just necessary—it’s something they’re capable of.

A third key is creating space. Change requires significant mental energy because our brains are wired for routine. When people are learning something new, they make mistakes, and it takes more effort. Leaders can support change by creating a safe space for learning, allowing time for missteps, and minimizing other demands. Patience, flexibility, and grace go a long way in helping people manage through the energy drain of change.

Ultimately, if organizations want to improve performance, they have to be willing to change—and commit to it. Leading change is one of the most important responsibilities of leadership. By painting a vision, building confidence, and creating space, leaders can make change more manageable—and more successful—for their people.
